Abstract:
Increasing legislative and financial drivers to promote sustainable development, combined with increasing levels of public awareness have led many companies to develop more sustainable products. This paper describes a number of sustainable product development (SPD) projects carried out by CLEMANCE with industry, mainly in Small or Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs). The paper summarises each project, the drivers behind the product involved and the barriers encountered. Themes from these examples are drawn out and discussed. The paper concludes that innovation is the key issue in SPD and that currently available eco-design tools will not deliver SPD in themselves and can even be a hindrance.
