Abstract:
Titania coating was synthesised by sol-gel technique and used for protection of stainless steel (SS) from oxidation at high temperature. Dip coating method implemented to deposit the titania coating on the SS substrates. The conversion of the titania xerogel films into crystalline ceramic coatings was studied in both cases as pure films and coated on the SS substrates. Specimens were examined by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy and fourier transform infrared measurements to study the effect of heating on the morphology and structure. Titanium oxide was found in both anatase and rutile phases after the specimens heated at temperatures of 700 or 900˚C. The titania films exhibits good protection for the coated substrates against the oxidation at the elevated temperatures compared with the uncoated substrates. The results were confirmed by using optical microscopy.
